“British Paratroopers Conduct Remote Mission for Hantavirus Case”

British paratroopers have conducted a mission to Tristan da Cunha, the most isolated British overseas territory, following a suspected case of hantavirus. The team, comprising six paratroopers and two military clinicians from 16 Air Assault Brigade, parachuted from an RAF A400M transport aircraft that traveled over 6,700 kilometers from RAF Brize Norton airbase in Oxfordshire to Ascension Island, then continued another 3,000 kilometers south to Tristan da Cunha.

Accompanying the troops were oxygen supplies, medical aid, and a refueling RAF Voyager. This operation marks the first deployment of UK military medical personnel for humanitarian assistance via a parachute drop, as stated by the Ministry of Defence.

The supplies were primarily intended for a British man who was a passenger on a cruise ship affected by a hantavirus outbreak and later docked at the island. The individual, showing hantavirus symptoms, is currently stable and isolated, according to the World Health Organization.

Due to critically low oxygen supplies on the island, the ministry highlighted that an airdrop with medical personnel was crucial to ensure timely care for the patient. Tristan da Cunha, with a population of approximately 200 residents, is situated midway between South Africa and South America, making it the most remote inhabited island globally, accessible only by boat due to the absence of an airstrip.

Earlier, on May 7, PCR tests were airlifted to Ascension Island, where another British individual from the cruise ship had disembarked before being evacuated for medical treatment in South Africa. Brigadier Ed Cartwright, Officer Commanding 16 Air Assault Brigade, expressed hope that the arrival of paratroopers, medical staff, and supplies has provided reassurance to the residents of Tristan da Cunha.
