Australia led the way by implementing a ban on teen social media use, with Canada’s federal government hinting at a similar move. A recent survey by Angus Reid revealed that 75% of Canadians are in favor of this initiative. Despite the recognition of the negative impact of social media on youth, the effectiveness of a ban remains a topic of debate.
Taylor Owen, the Beaverbrook Chair in Media, Ethics, and Communications at McGill University, who is part of the federal government’s expert advisory group on online safety and AI strategy taskforce, argues against viewing a ban as a cure-all solution. He emphasizes the need to concentrate efforts on enhancing the safety of social media platforms for all users.
