“Calgary Luge Duo Takes RV Adventure in New Zealand and Fiji”

Travel companions Beattie Podulsky and Kailey Allan, who frequently journey to various icy locations for luge competitions, opted for a change this summer. Both hailing from the snow-covered city of Calgary, the Canadians decided to explore New Zealand and Fiji in an RV rather than their usual cold destinations like Winterberg, Germany.

During their two-week adventure, Podulsky and Allan, who typically share tight quarters on their doubles luge sled, enjoyed the relative spaciousness of the RV and deepened their friendship. Being isolated in remote areas for much of the trip allowed them to focus on their bond.

The duo aims to leverage their partnership for a chance to compete in the inaugural Olympic women’s luge doubles event at the Milan-Cortina Olympics and potentially secure a podium finish. Their journey will resume with the start of the World Cup season in Winterberg on December 5.

Women’s doubles luge, introduced to the Olympic program in 2026, follows a format similar to the men’s event, with two runs on the same day determining the winner based on combined time.

Podulsky and Allan target February 11, 2026, to showcase their synergy to the global audience. Despite the chaotic nature of doubles luge, the athletes believe their compatibility and quick communication are key advantages.

In doubles luge, where crashes can be more severe due to the additional weight and complexity, maintaining harmony is crucial. Podulsky emphasized the heightened challenges of doubles compared to singles, citing the unpredictable nature of the sport.

Podulsky, aged 20, was immediately drawn to luge at a young age and transitioned to doubles competition after the sport was included in the Olympics. After unsuccessful partnerships, she found success with Allan, 22, who had a similar luge journey.

The pair’s bronze medal win in the team relay at the world championships provided encouragement ahead of the Olympic Games, despite acknowledging the external factors that influenced their success. The pressure to replicate their achievements adds to the stress as they prepare for the upcoming intense season.

Training intensively from October through Christmas, Podulsky and Allan anticipate a mentally challenging journey leading up to the Olympics. Despite the pressure, they remain optimistic about their prospects.
