Southwestern Ontario’s towing sector is reeling with a mix of sorrow and dismay after a tragic hit-and-run incident involving one of their own on Canada’s most heavily trafficked highway. The fatality occurred on Wednesday when a tow truck operator stopped by the side of Highway 401 near Woodstock, Ont., to assist a stranded motorist, highlighting the urgent need for a shift in driver attitudes.
Expressing the industry’s profound grief, Gary Vandenheuvel, the president of the Professional Towing Association of Ontario (PTAO), emphasized the devastating impact such incidents have on the tight-knit towing community. The incident, which took place in Oxford County around 7 a.m., involved a blue commercial tractor-trailer with a black tarp on top, with authorities actively searching for the driver.
Vandenheuvel underscored the constant dangers faced by tow truck operators while working on highways and urban streets, citing a lack of space and respect from drivers as a major concern. With 34 years of experience running a family towing business in Sarnia, he recounted numerous close calls, emphasizing the need for drivers to comply with safety measures, including slowing down and giving way to tow trucks as mandated by the Highway Traffic Act.
Violations of these regulations can result in fines of up to $4,000, three demerit points, jail time of up to six months, and a potential two-year license suspension. Vandenheuvel and fellow operator Dwayne Cameron from London echoed the call for stricter enforcement and harsher penalties to deter reckless behavior towards tow truck operators.
Cameron highlighted the lack of enforcement and the pressing need for action to address the escalating risks faced by tow truck operators. Proposing a strategy observed in some U.S. police departments where tow trucks are positioned alongside highways with police monitoring non-compliant drivers, Cameron emphasized the urgency of addressing driver attitudes and enhancing awareness through educational initiatives.
Both operators stressed the importance of fostering a culture of respect and compliance among drivers, emphasizing the fundamental need for motorists to prioritize the safety of those working on the roads. Initiatives aimed at educating drivers and enforcing existing laws are seen as crucial steps towards creating a safer environment for tow truck operators.
