“Roger Federer Selected for Tennis Hall of Fame”

Roger Federer has been chosen for the International Tennis Hall of Fame in his inaugural year of eligibility, the Hall in Rhode Island disclosed on Wednesday. The first player to secure 20 Grand Slam singles titles, Federer, part of a remarkable era alongside rivals Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, was the sole candidate to garner adequate backing in the player category for the Hall’s 2026 cohort.

Candidates become eligible after a five-year hiatus from the tour and must garner a 75% approval from the voting body, comprising tennis media, historians, industry figures, Hall members, and fans. The voting outcomes are not made public. In the contributor category, TV announcer and journalist Mary Carillo, a former player, also secured induction. The formal induction ceremony is scheduled for August.

Expressing his gratitude, Federer remarked, “I’ve always esteemed the tennis history and the precedents set by those who preceded me. To be acknowledged in this manner by the sport and my colleagues is truly humbling.” With a career Grand Slam, Federer boasts eight Wimbledon titles, six Australian Open victories, five U.S. Open triumphs, and one French Open win.

Federer’s initial Slam triumph occurred at the All England Club in 2003. He surpassed Pete Sampras’s then-record of 14 major titles by clinching Wimbledon in 2009, defeating Andy Roddick 16-14 in the fifth set of the final. His 20th Grand Slam victory was at the 2018 Australian Open. Federer’s Grand Slam tally was later exceeded by Nadal, who retired last year with 22 titles, and Djokovic, who currently holds 24 at age 38.

Known for his exceptional forehand, serve, attacking style, and graceful footwork, Federer secured 103 singles titles and 1,251 match victories, second only to Jimmy Connors in the Open era. He spent five years as the ATP’s No. 1, held the top spot for a record 237 consecutive weeks and a total of 310 weeks, guided Switzerland to the 2014 Davis Cup title, and clinched a doubles Olympic gold with Stan Wawrinka in 2008.

Federer, who concluded his career at Wimbledon in 2021 at nearly 40 years old, announced his retirement the following year by participating in doubles at the Laver Cup with Nadal. Revered as a role model, Federer influenced younger players like Carlos Alcaraz, the current No. 1 with six Grand Slam titles. Alcaraz praised Federer’s elegance on and off the court, describing him as a humble individual who elevated the game.

Federer’s dominance was highlighted by a record 10 consecutive Grand Slam finals from 2005-2007, winning eight. He appeared in 18 of 19 Slam finals and held streaks of 23 semifinals and 36 quarterfinals. Djokovic lauded these achievements as “superhuman.”

In the contributor category, Carillo was recognized for her groundbreaking commentary on tennis broadcasts and her work on HBO’s “Real Sports.” Inducted into the Sports Broadcasting Hall of Fame in 2018, she has garnered six Emmy Awards and three Peabody Awards.

The upcoming Hall of Fame ballot will feature holdovers Juan Martin del Potro and Svetlana Kuznetsova in the player category, with Serena Williams and Ash Barty eligible for the first time after playing their final matches in 2022.
