Shawnee Kish’s “No Evil” Soars on “North of North” Soundtrack

Renowned Mohawk musician Shawnee Kish expressed her excitement over the positive reception of her song “No Evil” featured on the popular series “North of North,” airing on APTN, CBC, and Netflix. The upbeat pop rock track is featured in the third episode of the show, which follows the story of a modern Inuk woman named Siaja as she navigates challenges in her life.

Kish, a Juno nominee for contemporary Indigenous artist or group, expressed her joy at the song resonating with both Indigenous and non-Indigenous audiences, especially in a show that celebrates female empowerment. The show’s soundtrack also features other Juno nominees such as the Inuit throat singing duo PIQSIQ and Haisla hip-hop duo Snotty Nose Rez Kids.

“North of North” has garnered global attention for its music, providing exposure for Indigenous artists to share authentic stories and educate audiences about Indigenous culture and history. The blend of traditional and contemporary music showcased in the series has been well-received, with each song carefully chosen to convey emotion and energy to viewers.

The recognition of Indigenous artists at prestigious events like the Juno Awards signifies a shift towards acknowledging their talent beyond traditional categories. Artists like Snotty Nose Rez Kids, PIQSIQ, William Prince, and Crystal Shawanda have received nominations outside Indigenous categories, highlighting their diverse musical contributions.

The evolution of Indigenous music plays a vital role in cultural revitalization and serves as a platform for deeper conversations on history and resilience. Melody McKiver, an Anishinaabe musician, emphasized the importance of music placements in film and TV for supporting Indigenous artists’ careers and fostering cultural dialogue.

As Indigenous music continues to evolve and resonate with audiences, there is a growing need to provide platforms for artists to showcase their talent and share their stories. Shawnee Kish aims to leverage her visibility and accolades to create safe spaces for Indigenous artists, inspiring the next generation to embrace their identities and artistic expression.
