Australian Paralympic gold medalist Paige Greco has passed away at the age of 28. The Australian Paralympic Committee and Australian cycling federation released a statement confirming her sudden death at her home in Adelaide due to a medical episode on Sunday.
In a heartfelt tribute, Paige’s mother, Natalie Greco, expressed the profound impact her daughter had on their family, emphasizing her kindness, determination, and warmth. Despite the deep sorrow of her loss, the family takes pride in Paige’s representation of Australia and the person she was.
Born with cerebral palsy, Greco made history by winning the first gold medal at the Tokyo Paralympics in 2021, setting a new world record in the women’s C1-3 3,000-meter individual pursuit. She also secured bronze medals in the road race and time trial during the event.
Having transitioned from Para athletics to cycling in 2019, Greco quickly rose to prominence in the Para-cycling world, claiming multiple world championship titles and World Cup medals. Her remarkable athletic achievements were matched by her exceptional character, as described by Cameron Murray, the CEO of Paralympics Australia, who highlighted her inclusive and supportive nature that left a lasting impact on those around her.
Paige Greco’s untimely passing has deeply saddened the Australian Paralympic community, recognizing her as not only an extraordinary athlete but also a truly remarkable individual whose legacy will endure beyond her sporting achievements.
