Jets’ Kris Boyd Injured in Manhattan Shooting

New York Jets player Kris Boyd, known for his role as a cornerback and special teams contributor, sustained severe injuries in a shooting incident in midtown Manhattan early Sunday, as per various media reports. The incident occurred around 2 a.m. outside a business establishment on West 38th Street close to 7th Avenue, per the New York Police Department. A 29-year-old individual was shot in the abdomen and was rushed to Bellevue Hospital, where he remains in critical but stable condition. Law enforcement officials revealed that no arrests have been made so far, and the investigation is currently ongoing.

Although the police did not disclose the victim’s identity, several news sources indicated that the injured individual was Kris Boyd. The Jets’ spokesperson issued a brief statement expressing awareness of the situation involving Boyd but declined to provide further comments at this time. Boyd’s agent did not immediately respond to inquiries regarding the incident.

Boyd has not participated in any games this season, his debut with the Jets, after being placed on the injured reserve list on August 18 due to a shoulder injury necessitating surgical intervention. He joined the New York team as a free agent in March and was anticipated to play a significant role in the revamped special teams unit led by new head coach Aaron Glenn and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. Unfortunately, Boyd sustained the injury during a training camp session on August 2 and had to be carted off the field following an evaluation of his left shoulder by trainers.

Throughout his initial six seasons in the NFL, Boyd earned recognition as a standout special teams player, notably during his tenure with the Houston Texans in the past two seasons. His notable moment came during the Texans’ divisional playoff defeat against the Kansas City Chiefs in January, where he jubilantly reacted to a forced fumble on a kickoff.

Boyd started his professional career with the Minnesota Vikings after being selected in the seventh round from the University of Texas in 2019. He later signed with the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 before eventually joining Houston’s practice squad that same season. Following the incident, Boyd’s teammates took to social media to solicit prayers for his recovery and well-being, emphasizing their support and hope for his swift recovery.
