RSF Forces Close In on El Fasher Amid Conflict

A Sudanese paramilitary group is currently engaged in combat with remaining resistance forces in El Fasher, a city in Darfur that has been under siege for 18 months. If the paramilitary force, known as the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), successfully takes control of El Fasher, it could solidify a territorial split in Sudan between opposing military factions.

Concerns have been raised about potential reprisals against the approximately 250,000 inhabitants remaining in El Fasher, the last stronghold of the Sudanese army in western Darfur. Reports indicate that the RSF fighters have been capturing fleeing civilians in nearby areas since they claimed to have seized the army’s headquarters in El Fasher on Sunday. According to the International Organization for Migration, around 26,000 people have already been displaced due to the conflict.

Witnesses and sources within the Sudanese military have reported that thousands of army soldiers and former rebel group members are currently surrounded by RSF fighters in western El Fasher. This has led to a dire situation for civilians, as highlighted by Tom Fletcher, the UN’s emergency relief coordinator, who expressed deep concern over reports of civilian casualties and forced displacement.

The RSF’s advancement in Darfur, where it has established a parallel government, has raised alarms about potential future consequences, including territorial partition. Experts warn that the RSF’s control over Darfur could lead to further escalations of conflict within Sudan. The situation is complicated by foreign involvement, with accusations that the United Arab Emirates is supporting the RSF militarily, undermining efforts for a peaceful resolution.

The RSF’s recent gains in strategic locations, such as Bara in North Kordofan, have put them in close proximity to the capital, Khartoum. The paramilitary group’s leadership has expressed intentions to extend their influence across Sudan. Efforts for peace talks facilitated by the U.S. are crucial to prevent further deterioration of the conflict, which has already resulted in widespread violence, famine, and displacement.

As the situation unfolds, concerns persist about the safety and well-being of civilians caught in the crossfire. Reports indicate that the RSF is directing displaced individuals to designated areas, potentially setting up displacement camps. Eyewitnesses have observed civilians being directed to towns under neutral control, but there are fears of revenge attacks and human rights abuses.

The urgency for humanitarian access and intervention is paramount to alleviate the suffering of civilians affected by the conflict in El Fasher and beyond. It remains to be seen whether diplomatic efforts can lead to a sustainable ceasefire and pave the way for a lasting resolution to the crisis in Sudan.
