Police in Longueuil, Quebec, have apprehended a woman following the death of a newborn discovered in a bus shelter. The infant was found at a bus shelter near Briggs Street on Chambly Road. Longueuil police spokesperson Jacqueline Pierre announced the arrest of a 33-year-old woman on Monday morning. Authorities are currently assessing the woman’s mental and physical well-being. While the police have not confirmed the woman’s relationship to the baby, they are considering the possibility of charging her with infanticide.
According to the Coopérative des techniciens ambulanciers de la Montérégie, the baby was found unclothed and cold, still connected to the placenta. Paramedics performed resuscitation procedures on the unconscious infant before transporting them to the hospital.
A call to 911 around 6:30 a.m. reported the presence of a baby at the bus shelter, as stated by the Service de police de l’agglomération de Longueuil (SPAL) on Facebook. Immediate first aid was administered to the baby, who was then taken to the hospital. Police initiated an operation in the area, urging the public to steer clear. Traffic closures were enforced on Briggs Street eastbound and Chambly Road northbound from 8 a.m.
Longueuil Mayor Catherine Fournier expressed deep concern over the abandonment and death of the newborn, highlighting the ongoing police efforts to investigate the incident. She noted similarities to a recent case involving the discovery of a newborn on Bourgeoys Street, although with different outcomes.
In a bid to identify a person of interest, police released surveillance footage of an individual carrying what appeared to be a baby. Investigations continue, with authorities asserting that the two incidents are unrelated. Fournier assured that the city would closely monitor the progress of the investigation while providing necessary support to the individual undergoing questioning.
