“Child Abduction Attempt at Winnipeg School Sparks Alarm”

Winnipeg authorities reported an alarming incident where a child was forcibly seized by an unfamiliar individual within a restroom at a St. Vital elementary school on Thursday. The suspect, a 28-year-old man with a history as a registered sex offender, now faces charges of assault and forcible confinement.

Responding to a distress call around 1:30 p.m., law enforcement officers were alerted to the presence of an adult stranger who had gained access to the school premises and confronted a student, as revealed by Const. Dani McKinnon during a news briefing on Friday.

Although the school’s identity was not disclosed by McKinnon, a communication sent on Thursday to parents by Darwin School principal Erin Enns confirmed that the incident occurred at the kindergarten to Grade 8 institution situated in close proximity to St. Vital Centre and affiliated with the Louis Riel School Division.

The school promptly initiated safety protocols, implementing a hold and secure procedure to secure all external entry points. According to police findings, the perpetrator clandestinely positioned himself within a restroom stall upon infiltrating the school. Subsequently, upon a student’s emergence from another stall, the individual seized the child.

Fortunately, the student displayed remarkable resilience, managing to break free from the assailant’s grip and promptly informing a teacher about the distressing encounter. While the child did not sustain any physical injuries, McKinnon refrained from divulging specific details regarding the student’s age or gender.

Following the incident, the suspect fled the scene before authorities arrived, but a vigilant eyewitness trailed the individual to a nearby mall, leading to his apprehension in the parking area with the assistance of mall security personnel.

The accused, identified as Scott William George, now faces multiple charges including assault, forcible confinement, and breaching child-related prohibition orders. Court records reveal George’s prior conviction in 2023 for sexual interference, resulting in a two-year sentence for illicitly engaging with an individual under the age of 16.

Notably, George’s criminal history dates back to 2015, encompassing convictions for offenses such as breaking and entering, theft, mischief, and weapon-related transgressions. The prohibition order imposed on George aimed at restricting his interactions with minors and barring him from zones frequented by children, as acknowledged by McKinnon.

Despite ongoing investigations, authorities refrain from speculating on the assailant’s motives or his method of accessing the school premises. In light of the distressing events, school officials and the community have expressed profound concern and pledged to enhance security measures to prevent future occurrences.
