“One Battle After Another” Dominates 98th Academy Awards

The movie “One Battle After Another” emerged as the standout winner at this year’s Academy Awards, clinching the coveted best picture award along with five other accolades. Initially, Ryan Coogler’s film “Sinners” led the nominations with a groundbreaking 16 nods, ultimately securing victories in four categories.

Michael B. Jordan, the star of “Sinners,” secured the best actor award, his first win in his inaugural nomination, garnering a well-deserved standing ovation from the crowd. Additionally, Jessie Buckley triumphed for her portrayal of William Shakespeare’s wife in “Hamnet,” following a stellar award season with wins at the Golden Globe, Critics Choice, Actor, and BAFTA Film events.

Amidst the celebrations, Amy Madigan scooped the best supporting actress accolade for her role in the movie “Weapons,” while Sean Penn claimed the supporting actor Oscar for his performance in “One Battle After Another” — marking his third win at the prestigious ceremony.

A notable Canadian presence was felt at the event as well. Maggie Kang from Toronto accepted the award for best animated feature for “KPop Demon Hunters,” while fellow Canadian Domee Shi, co-director of “Elio,” was also among the nominees. Canadian talents Tamara Deverell, Shane Vieau, Jordan Samuel, and Cliona Furey were honored for their work on “Frankenstein” in various categories, bringing home Oscar statuettes.

Furthermore, Montreal filmmakers Chris Lavis and Maciek Szczerbowski clinched the best animated short film award for “The Girl Who Cried Pearls.” Apart from the wins in best picture and best supporting actor categories, “One Battle After Another” also secured Paul Thomas Anderson’s first-ever wins for best adapted screenplay and directing, along with accolades for editing and casting, the latter being a new Academy Award category introduced after 24 years.

In a similar vein, “Sinners” amassed four awards, including Ryan Coogler’s triumph for best original screenplay and Autumn Durald Arkapaw’s win for best cinematography, making history as the first time a woman of color has won the award in this category. The film “Frankenstein,” shot in Toronto, also clinched three prestigious awards.
