“Carney Drives Canadian Trade Agenda at G20 Summit”

Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to travel to South Africa for the G20 summit, where he aims to leverage the absence of U.S. President Donald Trump to advance trade discussions with other nations. A Canadian official revealed plans to engage in fundraising efforts, promote Canada’s critical minerals sector, and foster informal coalitions among nations during the summit in Johannesburg.

Carney is slated to hold bilateral meetings with leaders from France, Norway, the European Union, Germany, and the United Kingdom on Saturday, followed by a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday. Trump’s decision to boycott the G20 and limit U.S. representation to a handover ceremony for next year’s chairmanship has shifted the focus away from the summit.

With Trump’s absence reducing the competition for attention, Carney has a unique opportunity to engage in direct talks with various world leaders on the sidelines of the G20. The Prime Minister aims to strengthen Canada’s trade relationships and reduce reliance on the U.S. amidst ongoing challenges posed by American tariffs and economic uncertainty.

In addition to bilateral engagements, Carney plans to discuss foreign investment opportunities with Qatar, explore trade agreements like the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) with the European Union, and advocate for collaboration on critical minerals and other shared priorities among nations. The Canadian government’s strategic approach includes efforts to enhance ties with India, despite past tensions and ongoing concerns raised by Canadian intelligence agencies.

Looking ahead, Carney’s agenda includes potential visits to India to further discussions and address lingering issues that have strained relations between the two countries. While challenges persist, both Canada and India are working towards a reset in their diplomatic and economic ties, with a focus on mutual interests and public safety considerations.
