“B.C. Leaders Stand Firm Against Oil Pipeline Plans”

The leaders of two significant communities in British Columbia’s North Coast recently met with Alberta Premier Danielle Smith to explore economic possibilities and reiterate their enduring objection to an oil pipeline passing through the area.

Kitimat Mayor Phil Germuth and elected Haisla Chief Maureen Nyce jointly stated that over ten years ago, Kitimat residents voted against the Northern Gateway project. They highlighted a non-binding 2014 plebiscite held amidst the now-defunct energy initiative aimed at transporting bitumen from Alberta to Kitimat.

The Haisla Nation, staunch opponents of the previous proposal, continue to hold a negative stance on an oil pipeline and export facility within their territory, a sentiment they made clear to Premier Smith during the recent meeting.

The meeting between Smith and the two leaders took place just before Prime Minister Mark Carney’s anticipated announcement of a memorandum of understanding with Alberta, which includes federal backing for a pipeline across northern British Columbia.

Germuth and Nyce emphasized their shared interests with Smith, particularly in the development of a liquefied natural gas sector in the region. They discussed projects like LNG Canada, which has garnered support from the Haisla due to the lesser environmental concerns associated with natural gas compared to oil pipelines.

While public support for a new pipeline has increased due to economic pressures from the United States, opposition remains firm among key groups like Coastal First Nations. Heiltsuk First Nation Chief Marilyn Slett adamantly rejected any notions of resurrecting an oil pipeline, emphasizing their unwavering stance against oil tankers on the coast.

Kitimat Mayor Germuth centered the meeting discussions on various opportunities, including natural gas and other economic ventures in Kitimat. He expressed openness to considering a new pipeline proposal, contingent on a different approach from the Northern Gateway project.

Chief Nyce conveyed disappointment over Mayor Germuth’s less definitive opposition stance but acknowledged the overall productive nature of the conversation with Premier Smith, emphasizing their mutual interests.

The ongoing opposition to an oil pipeline on the B.C. coast underscores the deep-rooted concerns and complexities surrounding energy projects in the region.
