After wrapping up Thursday’s practice, Kent Maugeri, the special teams coordinator for the Saskatchewan Roughriders, was energetically moving around the field. Maugeri is responsible for managing the kicking and return game for the team, which involves a significant portion of the roster. Reflecting on his coaching approach, Maugeri emphasized his focus on being a top-notch teacher and empowering players for success.
Throughout the game, Maugeri remains in close communication with head coach Corey Mace, discussing crucial decisions. Coach Mace highlighted the team’s dedication to special teams play, acknowledging the effort put in by core special team members and other players who go the extra mile to contribute.
Having joined the Roughriders in 2016, Maugeri is the longest-serving member of the coaching staff, having initially been hired as an offensive assistant by Chris Jones and later promoted to lead the special teams under former coach Craig Dickenson. Despite working with his third head coach in 10 seasons, Maugeri has consistently adapted and earned admiration from his current boss, Coach Mace, who described him as an exceptional coach with a strong work ethic and a great sense of humor.
Maugeri characterized his special teams unit as distinct from the offense and defense, labeling them as “junkyard dogs” known for their running and physicality. Post-game, Maugeri recognizes standout special teams performers by presenting them with a chain, inspired by the iconic wrestler Junkyard Dog from the 1980s.
Looking ahead to the Grey Cup, Maugeri aims to award the symbolic chain to a victorious special team member on Sunday night as the Roughriders face the Montreal Alouettes for the championship.
