On November 26, 2025, a devastating fire engulfed a Hong Kong apartment complex undergoing renovations. The fire, fueled by the bamboo scaffolding and safety netting covering the building, claimed the lives of 168 individuals and displaced nearly 5,000 residents.
Subsequent investigations highlighted concerns surrounding the safety of bamboo scaffolding, particularly the flammability of the green netting and the use of substandard materials in the renovation process. Several individuals have been arrested on suspicion of negligence and corruption related to the tragedy.
Originating from mainland China, the traditional bamboo scaffolding technique has deep roots in ancient architecture. While bamboo remains a popular choice in Hong Kong due to its affordability and sustainability, there is a growing shift towards using metal alternatives for construction projects, driven by safety considerations and alignment with international standards.
