Chinese EVs Expected to Enter Canadian Market Sooner Than BYD and Chery

The Canadian automotive market officially welcomed Chinese-made electric vehicles on March 1. However, popular brands like Polestar, Volvo, and Tesla are expected to enter Canada before BYD or Chery EVs.

Chinese electric vehicle brands such as BYD, Chery, and Geely typically offer lower-priced models due to cost-effective materials, reduced labor expenses, and government subsidies. Despite this, Volvo, Polestar, and Tesla, which also produce in China, could benefit from Prime Minister Mark Carney’s recent electric vehicle agreement.

With a restriction of 49,000 Chinese-made EVs allowed into Canada annually at a 6.1% tariff rate, Chinese automakers will strategically select models for export to maximize profits. The focus may be on high-profit vehicles rather than lower-cost options due to market limitations.

Addisu Lashitew, an associate professor at McMaster University, anticipates the arrival of Teslas, Polestars, and Volvos in Canada soon, while the approval process for Chinese brands may take longer. Streamlining procedures could be advantageous to prevent reciprocal delays with China.

To enter the Canadian market, Chinese EVs must meet Motor Vehicle Safety Act and Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standards requirements. The Appendix G Pre-clearance Program by Transport Canada assists in registering foreign manufacturers that comply with Canadian regulations, ensuring efficient border processes.

Transport Canada conducts thorough inspections to verify compliance with Canadian standards, including assessments of essential vehicle components. BYD is currently the only Chinese EV brand with clearance due to prior applications for selling taxis and buses in Canada.

Transport Canada and Global Affairs, contacted for approval timeline information on imported vehicles, did not provide responses by the deadline. Several Chinese auto manufacturers, such as Chery and Xiaomi, were also contacted for application status but did not respond. Polestar, evaluating the situation, did not comment, while Tesla did not respond to inquiries.
