The province of Prince Edward Island (P.E.I.) is considering legalizing combat sport fighting competitions, opening the door for activities like boxing and mixed martial arts (MMA) to take place on the island. Currently, P.E.I.’s criminal code prohibits prize fighting, which involves individuals engaging in combat with their hands or feet, in many instances. However, the government is now soliciting feedback on a potential legislation that would oversee both professional and amateur boxing, kick-boxing, and MMA events.
Neighboring provinces such as Nova Scotia and New Brunswick have already embraced tournaments in these sports, prompting advocates like Matt MacGrath, the proprietor of Renzeo Gracie Gym in Charlottetown, to emphasize the importance of introducing such competitions in P.E.I. According to MacGrath, P.E.I. is missing out on numerous revenue streams that could be generated through hosting prize fighting tournaments and events.
MacGrath highlighted the economic benefits that prize fighting could bring to the province, mentioning opportunities for hotels, restaurants, nightlife, and other sectors to thrive. Zack Bell, the Minister of Fisheries, Tourism, Sport, and Culture in P.E.I., echoed the sentiment that enacting the proposed legislation is long overdue. He emphasized the significance of ensuring participant safety, proper oversight of organizers and governing bodies, and aligning with industry best practices from other regions.
Bell also recognized the potential of combat sports to attract more tourists to the island, citing the growing popularity of MMA globally. He stressed the importance of providing opportunities for families and fans to support local athletes in their chosen sports without having to travel outside the province. Both MacGrath and Bell emphasized that combat sports like MMA should be viewed as legitimate athletic pursuits that require training, preparation, and skilled officiating to ensure the safety of participants.
Overall, the move to legalize combat sport fighting in P.E.I. aims to create a controlled and safe environment for athletes while also capitalizing on the economic and tourism benefits associated with hosting such events.
