“Tragic Death at BC Coal Mine Sparks Investigation”

A tragic incident occurred at a coal mine in the East Kootenay region of British Columbia, near the border with Alberta, resulting in the death of a 39-year-old man from Hosmer, as reported by the Elk Valley RCMP. The man was reported missing at Elk Valley Resources’ Elkview Operations in Sparwood, situated approximately 150 kilometers southwest of Calgary. Following the report, Elk Valley rescue teams, supported by the RCMP, commenced a search operation, leading to the discovery of the man’s remains on Friday morning.

Glencore Canada, the mine owner, confirmed that the deceased was a contracted employee engaged in maintenance duties at the time of the tragic incident. CEO Mike Carrucan of Elk Valley Resources expressed condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased, acknowledging the challenging period faced by the Elkview Operations workforce. The company is offering support services and counseling to its employees during this difficult time.

Authorities have informed the family of the deceased, and the RCMP, along with the B.C. Coroners Service, are present at the scene. The B.C. Mining Ministry has been notified and will participate in the investigation. Glencore has committed to conducting a thorough inquiry into the incident.
