On a recent evening, Taylor Heise and Abbey Murphy scored a total of four goals in Team USA women’s hockey Rivalry Series opener, leading to a 4-1 victory over Canada. Despite their impressive performance, the spotlight was graciously directed towards their teammate Laila Edwards.
Referring to Edwards as the “Queen of Cleveland,” Heise mentioned that the team had been calling her by that nickname all week. Edwards, a 21-year-old forward-turned-defenseman from Cleveland Heights, became the center of attention during her homecoming game. She received the loudest cheers when her name was announced and was invited by captain Hilary Knight to participate in the ceremonial opening faceoff against Canada captain Marie-Philip Poulin. Notably, Edwards also contributed to the team’s first goal with a primary assist.
Expressing her excitement, Edwards described feeling the energy in the arena when her shot was deflected in by Heise, tying the score at 1 in the first period. Despite sustaining a knee injury three weeks prior while playing for her college team, the Wisconsin senior persevered and continued to play wearing a brace.
Abbey Murphy, who scored a hat trick, acknowledged Edwards’ impact and the support she received from the city. Heise, who not only scored but also assisted in all three of Murphy’s goals, contributed significantly to the team’s success. The American squad, led by projected starter Aerin Frankel, secured their third consecutive win against Canada, extending their winning streak that began with a victory in the world championships in the Czech Republic.
In response to the game, Sarah Fillier scored Canada’s lone goal, and goalie Eve Gascon made her national team debut, stopping 22 shots. The Canadian team opted for a younger lineup, resting key players like Ann-Renee Desbiens. The series will continue with a match in Buffalo, followed by two games in Edmonton next month.
As the defending world champions, the American team aims to assert their dominance, while the Canadians, as the reigning Olympic champions, are determined to bounce back. Despite the loss, Fillier emphasized the importance of learning from the defeat and showcasing their strength in the upcoming games.
Looking ahead, Edwards is poised to make her Olympic debut at the upcoming Milan-Cortina Games in February. With an impressive track record, including a national championship with the Badgers and a world championship gold medal, Edwards has proven her talent on the international stage.
Coach John Wroblewski commended Edwards for her poise and skill, highlighting her ability to perform under pressure. Edwards, in turn, expressed her awe at NBA player Larry Nance wearing her USA hockey jersey to a Cavaliers game, showcasing the support and recognition she has received from her home state.
The next game between the teams is scheduled in Buffalo, offering another opportunity for both sides to showcase their prowess and determination on the ice.
