Bombing at Home of Italian Investigative Journalist Sparks Outrage

In a recent incident, investigative journalist Sigfrido Ranucci faced a dangerous attack at his residence, which his colleague described as a threat to all journalists in Italy. The bombing, targeting Ranucci’s home in Campo Ascolano, resulted in damage to two family cars, sparking outrage from press freedom advocates.

Ranucci, the host of the renowned investigative TV program Report on RAI, Italy’s public broadcaster, is known for exposing organized crime, corporate wrongdoing, and government corruption. The bomb, weighing approximately one kilogram, detonated outside Ranucci’s residence after he had returned home, luckily causing no injuries to him or his family members.

Despite the shocking event, Ranucci, who has faced numerous threats over the years due to his investigative work, affirmed his dedication to continuing his reporting. His senior editor, Aldo Ciccolella, emphasized that such attacks not only fail to silence journalists like Ranucci but also serve as a rallying call for press freedom.

The incident has raised concerns among Ranucci’s team, highlighting the unexpected nature of the attack on a prominent figure near Rome. The potential motives behind the bombing are varied, with Report having garnered criticism from various quarters, including politicians, corporations, and criminal organizations.

Italian authorities have initiated an investigation into the bombing, suspected to have mafia connections. The country’s Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, condemned the assault on Ranucci, emphasizing the importance of defending journalistic freedom and independence. International organizations like the IFJ have also denounced the attack, calling for a thorough probe to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Despite the intimidation, Ranucci and his team remain resolute in their commitment to investigative journalism. While they receive institutional support and enhanced security measures, Ciccolella urged all journalists, particularly those in the investigative field, to remain vigilant and steadfast in their reporting duties.
