Renowned reggae drummer Sly Dunbar, a two-time Grammy Award winner known for his work with artists like Bob Marley and Bob Dylan, has passed away at the age of 73. His wife, Thelma, confirmed the news to the Jamaica Gleaner.

Dunbar, along with bassist Robbie Shakespeare, formed the iconic reggae duo Sly and Robbie, also known as the Riddim Twins. They collaborated on hits for artists such as Black Uhuru, Jimmy Cliff, and Peter Tosh, gaining international recognition with musicians like Grace Jones and the Rolling Stones.

The duo’s musical influence extended to diverse genres, with collaborations on albums by Grace Jones, Serge Gainsbourg, and Bob Dylan. Tributes poured in from fellow musicians, including Ali Campbell of UB40 and members of the Rolling Stones, acknowledging Dunbar’s pioneering contributions to reggae and dancehall music.

Throughout his career, Dunbar was nominated for 13 Grammy Awards, winning twice for his work on Black Uhuru’s “Anthem” and Sly and Robbie’s “Friends.” He co-founded Taxi Records in 1980, a record label that fostered talents like Shaggy, Shabba Ranks, and Skip Marley.

Recognized for his distinctive drumming style, Dunbar’s impact transcended reggae, collaborating with a diverse range of artists such as Joe Cocker, No Doubt, and Carly Simon. His legacy as a prolific and influential musician will forever be remembered in the music industry.
