“Sinners” Leads History-Making Oscar Nominations

The nominations for the 98th Academy Awards were revealed on Thursday morning, with the film “Sinners” making history at the Oscars. Garnering a remarkable 16 nominations, it surpassed the previous record held by “All About Eve,” “Titanic,” and “La La Land.” The film, praised for Ryan Coogler’s writing and direction, as well as Michael B. Jordan’s performance, secured nods across various categories, including directing, acting (earning Jordan his first Oscar nomination), and best picture.

Additionally, “One Battle After Another” and the Norwegian film “Sentimental Value” had a notable presence in the nominations. “Sentimental Value” received nine nominations, a notable accomplishment for a non-English language film. Both “One Battle” and “Sentimental Value” are contenders for the Oscars’ newly introduced category after 25 years: achievement in casting.

The nominees for the best actress in a supporting role included Elle Fanning (“Sentimental Value”), Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas (“Sentimental Value”), Amy Madigan (“Weapons”), Wunmi Mosaku (“Sinners”), and Teyana Taylor (“One Battle After Another”).

The ceremony culminated with the highly anticipated award for best picture, with films like “Bugonia,” “F1,” “Frankenstein,” “Hamnet,” “Marty Supreme,” “One Battle After Another,” “The Secret Agent,” “Sentimental Value,” “Sinners,” and “Train Dreams” vying for the top honor.

The nomination lineup featured few surprises from previous awards shows, with some unexpected twists. Notably, “Wicked: For Good” was completely overlooked, while Delroy Lindo from “Sinners” received a supporting actor nomination instead of the anticipated Miles Caton. Jesse Plemons (“Bugonia”) and Paul Mescal (“Hamnet”) were notable omissions from the best actor category, while Apple’s “F1” emerged as a strong contender with four nominations, including best picture.

“One Battle After Another” nearly set a new Oscars record with four acting nominations, falling just short of the mark set by “Network” in 1976. Despite the anticipation surrounding Chase Infiniti from “One Battle,” Kate Hudson secured a nomination for her role in “Song Sung Blue.”

Following closely behind were “Hamnet” and “Marty Supreme,” with eight and nine nominations, respectively. Jessie Buckley from “Hamnet” is considered a frontrunner for the best actress award, having already won at the Critics Choice and Golden Globes.

The 98th Academy Awards are slated for March 15 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, with comedian Conan O’Brien hosting the event. In Canadian representation, Domee Shi and Maggie Kang, directors of “Elio” and “KPop Demon Hunters,” respectively, have been nominated for best animated feature, with “KPop” being a strong contender.

Montreal’s Chris Lavis and Maciek Szczerbowski earned a nod for best animated short film with “The Girl Who Cried Pearls,” while Alison McAlpine’s “Perfectly a Strangeness” is in the running for best documentary short film. Additionally, the Canadian teams behind the visual elements of “Frankenstein” received nominations for makeup and hairstyling, as well as production design.

Guillermo del Toro’s Netflix film also garnered a best picture nomination, adding to the diverse lineup of nominees across various categories.
