The 2028 Los Angeles Olympics torch relay will kick off in Atlanta, the host city of the 1996 U.S. Summer Games, and traverse through all states, according to organizers’ announcement on Tuesday. The Olympic flame will be ignited in Olympia, Greece, the birthplace of the Olympic Games, before embarking on its journey across the United States in spring 2028. The specific route for the torch relay will be disclosed in 2027.
LA28 organizers have described the relay as one of the most extensive in Olympic history, with plans to pass through renowned landmarks, participate in cultural and sporting events, and hold festival celebrations in various cities nationwide. Casey Wasserman, chair and president of LA28, expressed excitement about the shared privilege of carrying the flame to Los Angeles with individuals from every corner of the country.
Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens expressed pride in welcoming back the Olympic flame after 32 years since hosting the centennial Summer Games. Atlanta, having evolved and expanded its global connections, is eager to receive the flame from Greece, unite in celebrating the Games’ spirit, and pass it forward towards Los Angeles, marking a new chapter in America’s Olympic narrative.
Following the conclusion of the Olympics in August 2028, the Paralympic torch relay will commence, originating in Stoke Mandeville, England, the birthplace of the Paralympic movement. The starting point for the U.S. leg of the relay will be disclosed later. Coca-Cola, JPMorganChase, Allstate, and Xfinity will sponsor both torch relays.
