Ads promoting a documentary that scrutinizes Elon Musk, a controversial billionaire, were initially rejected on TikTok and X platforms but have now been approved for placement on YouTube and Meta’s social media channels after a short delay. The documentary film titled “Musk” released its trailer on Thursday, previewing its upcoming theatrical debut on October 9.
Indie distributor Bleecker Street faced rejection from all four companies, including YouTube, TikTok, Meta (parent company of Facebook and Instagram), and X, which is owned by Musk, attributing the rejection to the ad’s “political content.” Following online backlash, YouTube confirmed on Saturday that the ads for “Musk” are now live on the platform after a temporary restriction was lifted upon review.
Meta spokesperson informed CBC News on Monday that the rejected ads were mistakenly removed and have been reinstated without further details provided. Despite attempts to reach out, Bleecker Street, TikTok, and X did not respond to requests for comments.
TikTok prohibits paid political ads, while Meta imposes restrictions in certain regions such as the European Union. YouTube allows political ads with transparency disclosures, and X allows them in regions like the U.S. Elon Musk gained prominence in the political arena during his support for Donald Trump’s re-election campaign in 2024, later assuming a role in the administration. Although Musk no longer holds that position, he remains a polarizing public figure.
The documentary delves into allegations that Musk, the world’s wealthiest individual, has sought to influence online conversations, including claims of manipulating the 2024 election through his Starlink satellites and acquisition of Twitter, now X. The film has received critical acclaim, with reviews describing it as a scathing portrayal of Musk’s influence and power accumulation.
Director Alex Gibney expressed relief after YouTube and Meta reversed their decision, attributing the change to public pressure. Musk has consistently criticized the documentary as a “hit piece,” denouncing Gibney and threatening legal action over the film’s content. The production has garnered attention for its revelations about Musk’s online control and political involvement.
In a related development, a forthcoming film by Aaron Sorkin titled “The Social Reckoning” will explore the narrative of Mark Zuckerberg, adding to the spotlight on tech billionaires in the entertainment industry. Gibney’s documentary has sparked discussions around Musk’s controversial actions and his impact on society.
Overall, the documentary has sparked debate and critical acclaim for its revelations about Musk’s influence and power dynamics in the digital age.
