“Severe Weather Threatens Manitoba with Flooding Crisis”

Severe weather threatens flood-hit western Manitoba once more, with the potential for heavy rain exceeding 100 millimeters, warned Keane Kokolsky, a meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada. Southern Manitoba and southeast Saskatchewan are at extreme risk, facing severe weather such as tornadoes, large hail, damaging winds up to 130 km/h, and intense rainfall.

The aftermath of heavy rains on Sunday has left up to 150 people displaced in the municipality of Swan Valley West. Multiple highways in the region remain closed, with the Town of Swan River also declaring a local state of emergency. Additionally, a voluntary evacuation advisory is in place for properties along Shell River in the municipality of Roblin.

Minitonas experienced the most rainfall in the region, receiving about 148 millimeters in a few hours, leading to rivers overflowing their banks. Manitoba Hydro reported severe damage to equipment, causing power outages and access challenges in several areas.

The situation is dire in Minitonas, where a gas line rupture, boil water advisory, and overwhelmed sewer system have compounded the challenges. Cam McIntyre, owner of Wellman Lake Lodge, expressed concerns about the impact on his business and the community’s well-being amid the ongoing crisis.

Premier Wab Kinew assured that necessary resources are being deployed to assist affected areas. Emergency management teams are actively addressing the evolving situation, with a focus on ensuring the safety and well-being of residents in flooded regions. Environment Canada predicts continued wet weather with uncertainties in the forecast, emphasizing the need for vigilance and preparedness in the face of potential further storms.
