“UEFA Chief Ceferin Urges Trust Rebuild in Global Football”

European football chief Aleksander Ceferin emphasized the need to mend the fractured trust caused by FIFA president Gianni Infantino’s failed World Cup commercialization proposal. Ceferin, addressing a gathering in Lisbon, highlighted the importance of restoring unity within the global football community. The UEFA president, without directly naming Infantino, criticized individuals prioritizing personal ambitions over the sport.

Ceferin played a pivotal role in thwarting Infantino’s initiative to sell a significant portion of FIFA’s future commercial rights to investors, including Josh Kushner. Despite the project being abandoned, Ceferin stressed the ongoing task of rebuilding trust within the football landscape, focusing on unity, transparency, and governance for the greater good.

While Infantino aimed to accelerate soccer development globally through the FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) scheme, UEFA and other continental bodies objected, proposing alternative measures utilizing FIFA’s substantial cash reserves. Ceferin, ruling out his candidacy for the upcoming FIFA election, expressed confidence in potential challengers to Infantino.

In response to mounting criticism, Infantino offered to conduct an independent review of FIFA’s governance practices, seeking to address concerns over decision-making processes. UEFA had previously called for an unbiased evaluation of the FFE project, which had been developed without full transparency within FIFA’s management.

Infantino’s history with independent oversight raised skepticism, notably following the removal of a key governance official ahead of the 2018 World Cup. The incident led to resignations within FIFA’s governance panel, signaling discontent with the organization’s leadership.
