Toronto World Cup Ticket Prices Drop, Fans Struggle

Harp Patel’s family, residing in the Greater Toronto Area, are avid fans of soccer. Originally, they had plans to attend the 2022 World Cup in Qatar after successfully securing tickets for four different matches through a draw, totaling 24 tickets at a cost of approximately $5,500.

However, when it was announced that Toronto would be a host city for the 2026 World Cup, the Patel family opted to forego their Qatar trip and wait to enjoy the tournament in their hometown. Despite their anticipation, as the global event approaches Toronto, Patel has encountered difficulty obtaining tickets for any match, with numerous tickets remaining unsold at elevated prices.

Expressing frustration similar to many other soccer enthusiasts on platforms like Reddit and Instagram, Patel highlighted their struggle in obtaining tickets through lotteries and the resale market, where prices have surged beyond their reach.

Soccer writer Simon Kuper, with extensive coverage of eight World Cups, suggested that prices for Canada’s matches might significantly decrease in the coming days to ensure stadium attendance. He mentioned FIFA’s adjustment of resale prices for Toronto’s opening match as a potential opportunity for fans like Patel to secure reasonably priced tickets.

Kuper also speculated that FIFA, recognizing higher sports ticket prices in the U.S., aims to adjust prices to attract more fans to the tournament. Despite initial challenges, he believes that once the World Cup commences, any negative sentiments may diminish.

FIFA, the official seller and reseller of World Cup tickets, recently lowered the resale price for Toronto’s first match between Canada and Bosnia-Herzegovina to $534 on its website, down from over $1,300 earlier this month. Patel expressed concern over the escalating costs, making it prohibitive for their family to afford tickets, especially compared to their initial plans for multiple tickets.

Facing the dilemma of securing tickets for the World Cup, Patel is exploring alternative ways for her family to partake in the event outside of Toronto Stadium. Despite the challenges, she remains hopeful and determined to provide her Canadian-born children with a memorable World Cup experience in Toronto.

As the countdown to the tournament continues, Patel is actively seeking tickets for her family, eager to make the event a reality for her boys.
