Eight years following the success of the box office hit “Crazy Rich Asians,” which was a significant moment for Asian representation in Hollywood, the story is making a return to the screen as an HBO series. The upcoming eight-episode, one-hour drama will continue the narrative from the 2018 film. Constance Wu, Henry Golding, and Ronny Chieng will reprise their roles as series regulars, with Michelle Yeoh returning as a recurring character. Production is scheduled to commence in 2027.
Adapted from Kevin Kwan’s bestselling novels, the series will be spearheaded by Adele Lim, who co-wrote the original film. Kevin Kwan, director Jon M. Chu, and producers Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson will also return as executive producers. The collaboration for the series will be between HBO and Warner Bros. Television.
Adele Lim expressed excitement, stating that the series will delve deeper into the characters and settings with the eight episodes but did not disclose which storylines from the books will be incorporated. The 2018 movie revolved around Rachel (played by Wu), a New York economics professor, who discovers her boyfriend Nick (played by Golding) belongs to one of Singapore’s wealthiest families, with Yeoh portraying Nick’s mother, Eleanor, and Chieng as his cousin Eddie.
The announcement of the series provides answers to questions fans have had since the film’s release about what’s next for Rachel and Nick. Jon M. Chu, in a statement channeling Awkwafina’s character Goh Peik Lin, humorously expressed the anticipation for the sequel.
Toronto entertainment blogger Will Wong, who attended the 2018 Toronto premiere of the film, shared his excitement for the reunion the series will bring, likening it to catching up with old friends. “Crazy Rich Asians” was a groundbreaking movie upon its release, featuring the first all-Asian cast in a major Hollywood film in over two decades since “The Joy Luck Club” in 1993.
The romantic comedy, made for a reported $30 million US, grossed over $239 million US, becoming the highest-grossing Hollywood studio romantic comedy at the North American box office in nearly a decade. The success of the film highlighted the need for more diverse representation in Hollywood, and the upcoming series is expected to continue building on that success.
The television format of the series may provide a broader platform for the world created in Kevin Kwan’s book series. Kwan expressed his joy at seeing the characters return in a series, fulfilling a dream and thanking dedicated fans.
Will Wong hopes the show will pave the way for more opportunities for Asian talent in the industry. He emphasized the importance of breaking down barriers and providing platforms for writers, directors, actors, and other creatives.
