Prime Minister Mark Carney made history by becoming the first Canadian to lift the FIFA World Cup trophy during a visit from FIFA president Gianni Infantino in Ottawa on Sunday. Canada is gearing up to co-host the 2026 World Cup alongside the United States and Mexico.
Carney highlighted the growth of soccer in Canada since its debut in the 1986 World Cup, citing the success of Canada’s women’s team at the Tokyo Olympics. He praised the women’s team for winning gold and Christine Sinclair for breaking the all-time international goal-scoring record.
Regarding the men’s team, Carney mentioned their qualification for the upcoming World Cup in Qatar, attributing part of their success to strategic scheduling, such as a victory over the U.S. in Hamilton during a snowstorm.
During the event, Carney did not entertain questions but announced a significant government investment of $755 million over five years to foster soccer development at all levels in Canada. The majority of this funding, $660 million, is designated for local sports organizations to enhance children and youth soccer programs. Post the five-year period, an annual allocation of $118 million will continue to support local initiatives and facility upgrades.
Infantino expressed enthusiasm about bringing the World Cup to North America, emphasizing the importance of unity among Canada, the United States, and Mexico for the successful hosting of the tournament.
Infantino encouraged a show of national pride by suggesting that Canadian flags be displayed in every window across the country during the World Cup. He jokingly remarked that inundating the nation with flags would both intimidate visitors and demonstrate Canada’s support for the national team.
Following the remarks, Carney lifted the World Cup trophy, accompanied by group photos with children from the Ottawa City Soccer Club and Junior Achievement Youth. Canada’s opening match in the World Cup is scheduled for June 12 against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Toronto.
