Forensic examination of pollen suggests that an unidentified woman discovered floating near Vancouver’s Spanish Banks in 2022 may have spent her final days in the Seattle or Portland regions. The Vancouver police revealed this new evidence on Monday, urging the public to come forward with any information that could assist in identifying her.
Described as an African woman aged between 30 and 40 years old, she had short black hair styled in a bun and distinctive freckles on her face. Despite extensive searches across North America and through Interpol databases, no missing person fitting her description has been located.
In a bid to gather more details, the Vancouver Police Department sent the woman’s backpack and sweater for analysis at a U.S. Customs and Border Protection lab in Chicago last July. Analysis of pollen grains and fern spores on her sweater indicated recent exposure to an urban environment in the Pacific Northwest, likely in Seattle or Portland. Interestingly, minimal pollen grains or fern spores from the Vancouver area were detected, suggesting she was not a local resident.
The woman’s body, discovered by a tugboat crew on September 29, 2022, was found wearing a backpack but without any form of identification. Nearby, a blue inflatable kayak and an orange life vest were recovered, alongside insulin and candy, leading investigators to speculate that she may have experienced diabetic distress before the tragic incident.
VPD has released a video regarding the case and plans to travel to Seattle to share the new findings and seek public assistance, collaborating with the Seattle Police Department and Portland Police Bureau. Experts like Rolf Mathewes, a professor specializing in paleoecology and palynology at Simon Fraser University, emphasize the significance of pollen analysis in solving mysteries, citing past success in aiding law enforcement investigations through plant-based evidence.
The ongoing efforts to piece together the woman’s story underscore the importance of community involvement in bringing closure to her untimely demise.
