The Memorial Cup, the prestigious tournament of major junior hockey that determines the Canadian Hockey League champion, is set to kick off on Friday at Prospera Place in Kelowna, B.C. This event marks 22 years since the Kelowna Rockets of the Western Hockey League (WHL) secured victory on their home turf, aiming to replicate that success in 2026.
Josh Gorges, the Rockets’ assistant coach and a Kelowna native, reminisced about the “electric” atmosphere at Prospera Place during the 2004 Memorial Cup win, a moment he cherishes as one of the highlights of his hockey career. This sentiment underscores the significance of the Memorial Cup for those involved, including players who went on to have successful NHL careers like Gorges.
The upcoming 10-day tournament will feature a four-team round-robin format with the host city’s team, the Kelowna Rockets, taking on competitors from the Chicoutimi Saguenéens of the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League, the Kitchener Rangers of the Ontario Hockey League, and the WHL’s Everett Silvertips.
Former player Chris Ray mentioned that alumni from the 2004 championship team, including Hockey Hall of Famer Shea Weber, will be present at the tournament, reflecting the strong ties many players have maintained with Kelowna over the years.
Gorges emphasized the team’s intensified practice sessions following a five-week break post their defeat in the WHL playoffs against the Silvertips. Defenceman Nate Corbet expressed the Rockets’ readiness and focus on the tournament, highlighting the importance of staying present and not getting weighed down by the pressure of being hosts.
In preparation for the event, Kelowna has planned various community events alongside the games at Prospera Place, showcasing the city’s volunteer base and partnerships. The tournament’s organizing committee co-chair, Steve Thomson, praised the community’s support in hosting such events.
Originally slated for 2020 but canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Kelowna finally gets its chance to host the Memorial Cup this year. The Rockets will kick off their campaign against the Kitchener Rangers on Friday at 6 p.m. PT, with the championship game scheduled for May 31.
