Gilles Villeneuve’s helmet worn during his final Formula One race in 1982 has been sold for an unprecedented $1.25 million US, as confirmed by a motorsports memorabilia collector. The sale, brokered by Darren Jack, the president and CEO of Hall of Fame Collection located in Burlington, Ont., set a new world record price, surpassing the previous record of £720,000 (then $966,449 US) for Ayrton Senna’s helmet from the 1992 Belgian Grand Prix, sold last year.
The helmet, which had been held in a private collection for nearly three decades, was worn by the late Canadian racing icon Villeneuve for Ferrari at the 1982 San Marino Grand Prix in Imola, Italy. During that race, he finished second after his teammate Didier Pironi controversially overtook him on the final lap against team instructions to slow down.
Gilles Villeneuve, after whom Montreal’s F1 circuit for the Canadian Grand Prix is named, tragically passed away two weeks later at the age of 32 following a crash in qualifying for the Belgian GP, where he was wearing a different helmet.
According to Jack, the GPA helmet model worn by Villeneuve is exceptionally rare in the collecting realm, with only about five known to exist of his race helmets. The helmet is predominantly red with black side stripes and a stylized red “V” at the back, a design later replicated by current Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc at the 2023 Canadian GP.
Melanie Villeneuve, daughter of Gilles Villeneuve, expressed that the sale underscores the enduring legacy of her father. She emphasized the cultural value of his story, highlighting his remarkable achievements and humble beginnings as the son of a piano tuner and seamstress from Berthierville, Que., who rose to fame as a snowmobile racer. Villeneuve, renowned for his daring driving style, secured six Grand Prix victories for Ferrari, with his first win taking place in Montreal in 1978. His son, Jacques Villeneuve, went on to win the 1997 F1 championship.
Recently, Gilles Villeneuve was honored as a historic figure of Quebec by Premier Christine Frechette, with a cinematic biopic based on his life scheduled for release in November.
