Johnny Pauls, a respected veteran of the Second World War hailing from Newfoundland and Labrador, has passed away at the age of 102. Known fondly as “Uncle” in the Spaniard’s Bay community, Pauls was born on March 16, 1924, in Rencontre East, a fishing village on the south coast. He ventured out as a young teenager and later enlisted in the merchant navy during the war.
Pauls served aboard ships that transported vital supplies to Europe. He vividly recalled being stationed near the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor when news broke of Japan’s surrender, signaling the end of the conflict. Despite his significant contributions, Pauls humbly described his wartime experience as merely an “adventure.”
Sheldon Antle, Pauls’ grandson-in-law, expressed the profound impact Pauls had on their family, local communities, and the province as a whole. Even in his advanced age, Antle highlighted Pauls’ sharp wit and magnetic presence, drawing people to him with his captivating stories of growing up in Rencontre and his maritime experiences.
Following Pauls’ passing, Antle shared that they are reminiscing over old photographs and organizing a celebration of life scheduled for Monday at the Holy Redeemer church in Spaniard’s Bay. Reflecting on Pauls’ modesty about his wartime service, Antle emphasized the veteran’s dedication to the Royal Canadian Legion, where he played a pivotal role in its establishment and growth upon his return home.
A fixture at Legion Branch 9 in Spaniard’s Bay for many years, Pauls served as the branch president during the 1960s. Antle underscored that Pauls considered his involvement with the legion as a duty to his community, ensuring its prosperity and success. Branch president Paul Sheppard attested to Pauls’ indispensable role within the legion, emphasizing his irreplaceable contributions.
In a poignant gesture of appreciation, a community celebration marked Pauls’ 100th birthday a couple of years ago, drawing over 100 attendees to honor his remarkable life. Johnny Pauls leaves behind a legacy of service, camaraderie, and dedication to his community, embodying the spirit of selflessness and duty.
