An 18-year-old man from Vaughan has been arrested for his involvement in two alleged hate-motivated attacks on the Jewish community in Toronto, according to the police. The individual is facing charges including four counts of assault with a weapon and two counts of possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose. Toronto police provided an update on Friday, revealing that the arrest is connected to two separate incidents that occurred within a short timeframe.
The initial incident took place on April 30 in the vicinity of Bathurst Street and Lawrence Avenue W., where three visibly identifiable Jewish community members sustained minor injuries after the accused fired an imitation firearm, described as an “Orbeez-type gun,” at them from an SUV. The second incident occurred on Thursday night outside the Chasidei Bobov synagogue in North York, where three individuals were shot at with a similar imitation firearm from a vehicle. One victim suffered minor injuries in this incident.
Acting deputy chief Joe Matthews, speaking outside the Chasidei Bobov synagogue, confirmed that both events are being treated as hate-motivated offenses. He emphasized the serious nature of the incidents and expressed solidarity with the Jewish community, noting the heightened fear among Jewish residents due to repeated targeted attacks. Sara Lefton, chief development officer at the UJA Federation of Greater Toronto, also condemned the attacks, stating that the community is feeling shaken and angry.
Prime Minister Mark Carney condemned the assault as an act of antisemitism, expressing relief over the arrest. He extended his support to law enforcement in their investigation and pursuit of justice for the victims. Premier Doug Ford also denounced the incidents, emphasizing zero tolerance for such acts and calling for strict punishment for those responsible.
