Canada’s primary food safety regulator has taken action against a frozen dessert company based in Quebec. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) recently announced the suspension of two licenses held by Abe’s Frozen Desserts Inc. in Terrebonne, Quebec. This suspension, enacted on May 8, prohibits all food production activities covered by the affected licenses. The decision followed an inspection conducted under the Safe Food for Canadians Act and its related regulations.
During the inspection, various issues were identified, including deficiencies in pasteurization controls, preventive control plans, hazard analysis, sanitation practices, and Listeria monocytogenes sampling. In addition, concerns were raised regarding equipment maintenance and record-keeping procedures.
Adherence to food safety regulations is crucial for safeguarding public health and preventing product recalls, as emphasized in the official statement. Despite the suspension, no recall has been linked to the company’s products. The suspension will be lifted once corrective actions are verified by the licensee. Failure to address the identified issues within 90 days could result in license cancellation, in accordance with the regulations.
Furthermore, the license may be revoked based on other stipulations outlined in Section 39 of the regulations. Abe’s Frozen Desserts Inc. specializes in producing kosher and dairy-free ice cream and ice pops, which are retailed in various local supermarkets. Their website currently features a teaser message “something cool is coming soon,” with limited additional details provided. The company’s social media platforms have not been updated since September.
