Andy Burnham has become the fifth British Prime Minister in four years and the seventh in a decade after accepting an invitation from King Charles to lead the government. This came shortly after Keir Starmer resigned. Burnham, who received nominations from 379 out of 403 Labour lawmakers in the House of Commons, officially became the leader of the Labour Party last week.
In the British parliamentary system, governing parties can change leaders and, consequently, Prime Ministers without the need for a general election. The next national election is not mandated until 2029. In his inaugural speech as Prime Minister, Burnham expressed his intention to act as a “circuit breaker” to halt the cycle of political instability in the UK.
“We need to demonstrate to the world that we can restore stability,” Burnham stated outside 10 Downing Street. He emphasized the need for improvement, saying, “We have fallen short, and we must do better.”
Prior to his official appointment, Burnham mentioned that among his initial international calls would be to U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Burnham assured reporters that Britain’s support for Zelenskyy would be unwavering and resolute.
Various world leaders, including Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, congratulated Burnham via social media. Carney expressed his anticipation of collaborating with Burnham to enhance security and prosperity on both sides of the Atlantic. The White House confirmed a brief conversation between Burnham and Trump.
Facing immediate economic challenges, Burnham vowed to address the sluggish economy, cost-of-living pressures exacerbated by conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, and strained public services. Opposition Leader Kemi Badenoch stressed the importance of properly funding Burnham’s announcements, emphasizing that increased borrowing or taxes were not viable options.
Burnham, a former MP, culture minister, and health minister under previous administrations, has a background in federal politics. He made unsuccessful bids for the Labour leadership in 2010 and 2015. Burnham is set to announce his cabinet members soon, with expectations that Rachel Reeves and David Lammy will not be included.
Nigel Farage, leader of Reform UK, called for an immediate election, arguing that Burnham should not make significant political changes without a mandate. Starmer bid farewell outside 10 Downing Street, acknowledging Burnham and expressing optimism for his successor’s tenure. Starmer, who led Labour through significant electoral gains in mid-2024, cited missteps during his term that led to his resignation.
Starmer will continue as the MP for Holborn and St. Pancras.
