WestJet employees have decided to halt their job action, but Vancouver International Airport (YVR) is cautioning passengers with WestJet bookings that their flights might still face disruptions. Following the cancellation of hundreds of flights, WestJet and the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) revealed a tentative agreement in their contract dispute early Monday. YVR indicated that it will take some time for WestJet’s operations to return to normal. Of the scheduled WestJet flights from Vancouver on Monday, only 21 are set to operate, while 49 others remain canceled. WestJet Encore flights were not impacted by the situation.
Flight attendants from WestJet went on strike on Sunday in an effort to receive compensation for the time they spend off-duty but still assisting passengers or waiting for delayed flights. Some WestJet passengers experienced the aftermath of the disruptions on Monday. For instance, Tran Thai from Edmonton shared that his flight was canceled, and he had to reroute through Vancouver to Victoria, followed by a lengthy 16-hour layover before catching a flight back home. WestJet has not provided specifics regarding the tentative agreement, which still requires ratification by CUPE members to become effective.
